Ontario Government Suspends Eco Fee

At a press conference held this past Tuesday, Ontario Minister of the Environment, John Gerretsen, announced that government is ending eco fees on the consumer products designated under phase two of Orange Drop or the Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste (MHSW) Program. The eco fees on consumer products came into effect in Ontario on July 1st. (Consumer eco fees can continue to be levied on the nine phase one materials introduced in July 2008).
To make this happen, government has told Stewardship Ontario that the steward obligation to pay Stewardship Ontario fees for phase two materials – the 13 additional classes introduced July 1, 2010 – will be suspended for 90 days.

There are no changes to the steward obligation for the last quarter of phase one (April 1, 2010 - June 30, 2010). Stewards should report their sales of phase one materials for this period as required by July 31, 2010.

Changes to reporting processes will be required to accommodate this decision for the third quarter of 2010 (July 1 to September 30). Please do not report data for this period at this time. Further instructions on Q3 reporting will be provided by
Stewardship Ontario in the near future.

Housing Starts Cool in June, According to Home Goods Online

Existing home sales fell 8.2% in June when compared to the previous, driven primarily buy declines in Toronto and Calgary. However, the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) also noted that both sales and new listings fell in almost 70% of all local markets across the country.
CREA also noted that sales during the second quarter of the year - which also ended in June - fell 13.3% from the near record levels set in the first quarter of 2010. The drop was attributed to tightened mortgage regulations and anticipated increases in interest rates.

Milos Jancik to Step Down as President & CEO, EFC

Harald Henze, Chair of Electro-Federation Canada, issued a letter to EFC Official Representatives last week, announcing that Milos Jancik will be stepping down as President & CEO of EFC at the end of this year. Harald recognizes and thanks Milos for his six years of exemplary service at EFC.

During his tenure, Milos has led EFC to address such complex issues as the Objective-based Industrial Electrical Code and the increased focus on environmental legislation, while continuing to offer value-added statistical reporting, education and information seminars, an annual conference and opportunities for cross-industry networking.

In particular, under Milos' leadership, EFC has focused on product life-cycle responsibility for manufacturers and increased requirements for energy efficiency. Milos has brought keen insight and thoughtful leadership to EFC's work to serve its members effectively through this time of change.

Through his leadership, EFC has further improved its financial position, the strength of its team, and its capacity to address the issues that will face our industry over the short- and medium- term. He has provided stability through good and bad times.

In the weeks ahead, the EFC Board will be conducting an executive search to identify the new president who will lead EFC by the beginning of 2011. All applications and nominations should be submitted to any member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors.

Once again, a special thanks to Milos for his leadership over the past six years and we wish him all the best in the years ahead.

Electric Heating Ban Lifted: EEMAC & North American Electric Heating Coalition Score Victory

Earlier this year, we reported that EEMAC, along with its Electric Heating Section, had created a North American Electric Heating Coalition comprising over 15 companies whose goal was to stop the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) Committee from banning the use of electric heating. The IECC Committee had proposed the following text be added to the Code:

“403.7 Space Heating Equipment (Mandatory) - Electric resistance heating shall not be used for space heating.  This includes, but is not limited to, electric space heaters, electric furnaces, electric baseboard heaters, electric wall heaters and electric thermal storage.”
The implication of this Code change would have eliminated future markets for such equipment, resulting in untold millions of dollars in lost sales opportunities for our industry. The Coalition, led by EEMAC, countered the proposal and the International Energy Conservation Code Committee recently withdrew their proposed change.

"We thank all members who banded together to help override proposed changes to the Code," says Wayne Edwards, Vice President, Electrical Equipment Manufacturers Association of Canada. "Although we have achieved a victory at this point, the EEMAC-led coalition will continue to communicate and educate members of IECC as to why this will be a positive step for all moving forward. Working together, we can continue to develop and foster energy conservation in the North American market place."

Reg. 449/2004 (the “Regulation”).

“This approval marks a significant milestone for the Canadian appliance industry,” says Larry Moore, Vice President, CAMA. “BC residents will now have the opportunity to dispose of portable household and floor care appliances in an environmentally-sound fashion – an important step in our drive towards sustainability. We thank AHAM, CHHMA, and the Product Care Association for their help in developing the program plan. We also thank to the BC government for supporting this important industry initiative and trust other provinces will follow suit shortly hereafter.”

While the plan covers a five-year period, the program’s implementation date has been set for April 1, 2011. The plan includes a communication and education initiatives to ensure public awareness of the program, drop-off site locations, as well as proper handling of portable electrical appliances powered by 120V 60 Hz input power or batteries, designed for use in homes in the following categories:

NEMA Expands enLIGHTen America Campaign to Twitter and Blogosphere

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has announced the expansion of its enLIGHTen America (eA) campaign to include blogging and a Twitter page. The expansion marks the most recent step in an initiative dedicated to building awareness of the value of lighting retrofits using the latest technology.

Since 2008, eA has been informing commercial building managers that lighting upgrades are not only a great source of money and energy savings, but also provide a great return on investment and increase overall asset value.

In its first year eA reached more than a million people in real estate and building management markets. It accomplished this by presenting at industry trade shows, publishing feature articles, and distributing press releases. While these venues have defined the campaign in the past, eA is embracing new opportunities presented through social media.

Campaign progress can now be followed on Twitter at http://twitter.com/nemasavesenergy.
