The Canadian Appliance Manufacturers Association (CAMA), an Electro-Federation Canada (EFC ) Council, is pleased to announce the approval of the BC Portable and Floor Care Appliance Stewardship Plan for small household appliances and floor care appliances. This Plan was developed by CAMA in partnership with AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) and CHHMA (Canadian Hardware and Housewares Manufacturers Association), and submitted by the Canadian Electrical Stewardship Association (CESA) to the British Columbia Ministry of Environment on June 25, 2010, pursuant to the requirements of the BC Recycling Regulation, B.C. Reg. 449/2004 (the “Regulation”).
“This approval marks a significant milestone for the Canadian appliance industry,” says Larry Moore, Vice President, CAMA. “BC residents will now have the opportunity to dispose of portable household and floor care appliances in an environmentally-sound fashion – an important step in our drive towards sustainability. We thank AHAM, CHHMA, and the Product Care Association for their help in developing the program plan. We also thank to the BC government for supporting this important industry initiative and trust other provinces will follow suit shortly hereafter.”
While the plan covers a five-year period, the program’s implementation date has been set for April 1, 2011. The plan includes a communication and education initiatives to ensure public awareness of the program, drop-off site locations, as well as proper handling of portable electrical appliances powered by 120V 60 Hz input power or batteries, designed for use in homes in the following categories:
- Countertop Cooking Appliances
- Garment Care Appliances
- Floor Care Appliances
- Air Treatment Appliances
- Personal Care Appliances
- Time Measurement Appliances
- Weight Measurement Appliances
